13th April: The county first team had a narrow loss 7½ - 8½ to Cambridgeshire on Saturday in the Minor Counties quarter final - the scoresheet can be found below. It was a disappointing end to the season but thanks to everyone for playing, and thank to all the players for who turned out this season and a particular thank you to all the drivers. Report by Graham Booley.
23rd February : Following a tight, tense match the county first team managed a 9-7 win over Greater Manchester on Saturday which qualifies us for the national stages, the scoresheet is below. My thanks to the players who stood in at short notice. Our next match will be on 25th April against East 2 (probably Cambridge, Suffolk or Norfolk). Report by Graham Booley.
21st February : The county under 100 team lost 3½ - 8½ to Staffordshire on Saturday, the scoresheet can be found below. However it was much closer than the scoreline suggests. We were missing several stronger players and so I think it was a good result considering. Well done to those playing their first game in the competition today as you all performed very well. Special congratulations go to Sasha & Alastair on their victories, and to Matthew (Lo), Stephen & Shyen on their draws. And a special thanks to Neil Roberts for finding and arranging the venue. Unfortunately this marks the end of our progress in the competition but we will look to enter another team next season. Below are all of your performances for the competition. An extra special congratulations go to Alastair Mottram-Epsom on winning all three of your games. For a complete list of players and their performance see here. I am pleased that we have played 15 different juniors in the u100 county competition this season and impressed that 10 of you achieved at least one positive result. For those coming to the training day on 14th March we will hopefully have an opportunity to look through some of these games and understand where we can improve. Report by Paul Colburn.
31st January : The county under 100 team lost narrowly to Warwickshire by 7-5 on Saturday, the scoresheet is given below. Given that we were at one stage 4½ - 1½ up I did think that we were on course for a famous victory. Anyway you can all be very proud of your performance as we certainly made Warwickshire sweat. They top the group and their side was very strong which makes our performance all the more impressive. Congratulations go to Ben, Peter, Alastair & Peter on your masterful victories and to Tom & Neil on your draws. Our last remaining match is at home to Staffordshire on the 21st Feb. I will let you know the venue as soon as I have finalised the details but please can you let me know if you are available to play. Report by Paul Colburn.
24th January : The county first team had a disappointing narrow loss to Worcestershire on Saturday, see the scoresheet below. We now have to play Greater Manchester to see who gets the third place in the National stages, the match is likely to take place on Saturday 21st February at Checkley.
2nd November: Last year we lost our opening match against Nottinghamshire u100 team 12-0. This season we were up against them again and they had an even stronger team out this time. We were missing several key players and had a player pull out a few days before. When we looked at the teams we were outgraded by around 20 points on every board. Another whitewash looked on the cards! However, much has changed in a year and our juniors have improved a lot over that time. We won some games this time: Congratulations go to Drew, Peter Poolan, Alastair and Tom. Drew was one of the first to finish making easy work of his 96 graded opponent. Peter also made light work of his opponent converting his material advantage. Alastair played a great game and managed to convert his pawn endgame - with the commentary team unduly worried when his king went behind the pawns. Best of all was the performance of Tom Brown who took almost the full four hours to grind down his opponent. Despite being 26 point outgraded, it was a masterful performance where he always looked in control. There were also two hard-fought battling draws that went right to the endgame - well played to Matthew Gamble and Andy. The full scoresheet is given below.
